The Animal Production Biosecurity Academic Chair is an industry/academic collaboration to further biosecurity training and research. CID LINES, an Ecolab Company, collaborated with Faculty of Ghent University Veterinary Medicine, Belgium, to create the position.
The initiative focuses on biosecurity measures that keep animals healthy, including One Health topics such as antimicrobial use. The data gathered in this project is creating a strong foundation for biosecurity training across sectors.
Farm to Fork focuses on the idea that animal production impacts human health. Cleaning and disinfection, water treatment, and animal/personal/transport hygiene are key to biosecurity and have significant benefits inside and outside the farm.
OneHealth makes a link among the health of animals, people and planet. If we improve animal health, it has a positive impact on human health and supports environmental sustainability.
Ilias Chantziaras serves as the Animal Production Biosecurity Academic Chair. Mr. Chantziaras has been involved in projects linking farm biosecurity and antimicrobial use in numerous countries in Europe and Asia. He has also authored a systematic review on the assessment of C&D practices in several European countries.
Jeroen Dewulf is a Professor in Veterinary Epidemiology at Ghent University Veterinary Medicine, Belgium. Mr. Dewulf's research focuses on the application of biosecurity measures and their role in disease prevention within animal production. Additionally, he has authored publications related to biosecurity practices and the reduction of antibiotic use.

Biosecurity is key to preventing the introduction and spread of germs responsible for epidemic and transboundary diseases. This includes African Swine Fever and avian influenza, which can have devastating impacts on the production chain of a farm. Likewise, biosecurity is crucial in reducing risk of zoonotic infections such as Campylobacter and Salmonella. Taking a preventative approach in animal production addresses not only animal health but the accompanying economic consequences of infected animals.
The Animal Production Biosecurity Academic Chair focuses on using biosecurity data, research and training to create meaningful outputs that will contribute to more sustainable and resilient practices in agriculture.
